Discover the Wonders of Yellowstone: The Magic of Dirt In My Shoes Itineraries and A Thrilling Review of the Park!
Your Ultimate Yellowstone Travel Guide: Unveiling the Park’s Wonders
AWESOME is literally the one word capable of giving Yellowstone the credit this magnificent park deserves. As reviews go, Yellowstone National Park has something for every visitor to enjoy. Giant check marks for:
- Mind-blowing thermal features like Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, and stinky Mud Volcanoes.
- Herds of Bison wandering freely, packs of wolves, grizzly bears, and moose. We hear these animals are here…we only saw Bison (lots of them).
- Epic Waterfall into a canyon massive enough to earn the name “The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone”.
- Travertine terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs
- The largest log structure in the world. Don’t miss the massive stone fireplace.
Since our RV Travel journey began, Yellowstone has been our “must-do” trip! During our 3rd year, we mustered the courage to tow our fifth wheel 1,700 miles (one way) to Yellowstone. As Sara and I planned this EPIC adventure, one thing was clear: we needed to make sure we saw all the sights and did all the cool things.
With a National Park as large as Yellowstone, overwhelmed was just touching the surface of how we felt when trying to plan this adventure!
I discovered Dirt In My Shoes on a cross-country adventure with my sister in 2022. We loved how each itinerary outlined the perfect day of activities and gave us plenty of time to enjoy the major sites and small off-the-beaten-path destinations as well!
Needless to say, Sara and I were thrilled that the Dirt In My Shoes team created itineraries ranging from 1 to 4+ days in Yellowstone National Park!
Get the Best National Park Itineraries with Dirt In My Shoes
Dirt In My Shoes was founded by Ash, a former National Park Ranger, who spent years exploring the National Parks. As Ranger, she shared the best features with visitors daily. And now as a retired National Park Ranger, she continues exploring our NP.
Being an expert and having a network of other Rangers to lean into Ash, has the best knowledge of the parks. She knows where to go, and when to get there, and helps plan your trip down to the minute!
That may sound extreme, but during peak season in the mega National Parks like Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, the Might 5 of Utah, etc. these parks are stretched to the max with visitors.
Don’t worry! With Ash by your side through the magic of the Dirt In My Shoes Itineraries you will maximize your adventure in the park, see the top sites, and spend less time stuck in traffic.
Or you could hire a private guide who can probably usher you through the long lines and crowded parking lots for about 20x the cost of a Dirt In My Shoes Itinerary. We had friends who hired a guide…let’s just say it the cost is nearly the same as a month of rent!
In other words, Ash gives a huge return on investment!!!
Yellowstone 3-Day Itinerary from Dirt In My Shoes: Stress-Free Travel Planning
Ash is a lifetime visitor and explorer of the National Parks, so she has tremendous expertise when it comes to planning the perfect visit to a National Park. Her 3-day itinerary matched our journey almost perfectly to the number of days we were staying in West Yellowstone.
Each Dirt In My Shoes Itinerary outlines important things to remember like
- Links to the NPS website to check for park closures or detours
- Entrance passes or fees – some parks require passes to gain admittance
- Tips on Lodging, Dining, etc.
Next Dirt In My Shoes provides an overview map of Yellowstone and in particular, the area you will explore during that day’s adventures.
Adventure Planning
The mornings and afternoons are typically planned out in 45 to 60-minute time blocks which offers ample time for visitors to explore an area without feeling rushed. Each section gives a short summary of the location of the main features (e.g., Gibbon Falls) Or the North Rim Scenic Drive.
Ash gives great advice regarding the order to visit these destinations. For instance, some locations have small parking lots, so arriving early is important to secure a good parking spot and get on your way. While some of the time windows provided might seem like a long time to stare at a waterfall or a thermal feature, trust us you will spend the time in the car driving to the next destination.
We explored at a comfortable pace, never felt rushed, and we had plenty of time for each attraction.
One super nice feature is the summary of each hike…distance, elevation, difficulty level, and whether pets are allowed or not. We found most of the main trails in Yellowstone were very easy for anyone with hiking experience. I’m sure there are very tough back-country trails…Maybe next time!!
For Lunch, Ash offers suggestions based on landmarks near your final morning time attraction. For our Day 1, this was near Canyon Village.
Since we encountered minimal traffic we were “ahead” of schedule and completed some of the afternoon plans before lunch. This gave us time to each lunch in the car as we drove to the Norris Geyser Basin. Maybe not the most relaxing lunch, but we were on a mission. We had about 2 to 2.5 days in Yellowstone and we were determined to do it all!!

What other Resources Do I Need When Visiting Yellowstone?
Guide Along audio tours were terrific. These tours bring the park to LIFE! Want to know what you are driving by or fun facts? Guide Along is your answer!
Just like Ash’s itinerary make sure you hit the right attractions at the right time, Guide Along shares exactly what you are driving past before you blow by it at 45MPH!
Since it’s GPS enabled the guide tells the driver exactly where to turn. Turns offs and parking spots are announced well in advance so no need to scramble to make a U-Turn!
We found content creators like Adventures of A + K and others super helpful while planning our Yellowstone trip.
Since we planned on taking mostly popular trails and boardwalks we did not invest a high-quality Yellowstone Map. We didn’t find we needed a map beyond the simple map the NPS provides when entering the park. However, you may find a map of Yellowstone to be helpful if you want to explore other less popular and trafficked areas!
