We spent a week at Mount Pleasant KOA during our traditional family getaway between Christmas and New Year. Charleston’s warmth offered us the perfect R&R.
The KOA served as an ideal home base for our Charleston adventure.

Arrival and First Impressions at Mount Pleasant KOA
Our arrival at KOA Mount Pleasant was marked by its distinctly Southern charm, with a private road adorned with live oaks and Spanish moss, showcasing the South’s natural beauty. The family-friendly vibe of KOA Mount Pleasant was immediately evident, making it clear we had chosen the perfect spot for camping with kids.
The gated entry, closing at 7 PM and requiring a code, added an exclusive feel to our stay.
KOA Mount Pleasant’s entrance, a third of a mile from Highway 17, leads to campsites even further secluded. This added distance from the road enhanced our sense of tranquility. Unlike many campgrounds close to busy roads, like Santa Rosa RV Resort, KOA Mount Pleasant offers a refreshing retreat.
Check-in was smooth, with Sara quickly getting a personal escort to our site. KOA’s attentive service meant immediate assistance for any site issues. I love this “white glove” experience!
During our stay, we saw KOA staff constantly maintaining the campground’s excellent condition, a challenging task given its 71 bustling sites and nearly 20 cabins.
Review of Our Site at Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Holiday
Our spacious site (no. 14), about 90 to 100 feet long, offered ample room for parking our truck either in front or behind our Keystone Cougar 364 BHL.
Our site featured a large patio with packed gravel, which was luckily rain-free during our stay. For future visits, we’d opt for the fully concrete premium sites.
Our site boasted a large ‘side yard’, amplified by a neighboring tiny cabin, providing ample space. It included an unused firepit and picnic table due to the chilly, windy weather.
Our site faced a serene private lake, enhancing my morning workouts with a picturesque view of ducks landing on the water – a tranquil start to the day.
Shower Houses
The bathhouses, close to our site, had separate shower rooms, providing basic facilities. While convenient, they lacked integrated bathroom amenities, a slight inconvenience for activities like shaving. We found this similar to our visit to the Medora Campground.
Another bathhouse offered four private bathrooms with showers near the cabins, a more user-friendly option. However, availability could be limited, with only eight showers for around 90 sites.
Pool + Playground
The pool, splash pad, and playground, a brief walk from our site, remained unused due to cold weather and our kids outgrowing swingsets. They seemed well-maintained, though.
The campground features a Disc Golf course. Though intrigued, the chilly winds deterred us from playing.
KOA’s unique pedal cars, available for rent, promised fun. A word of caution: they’re quite low to the ground.
Discovering the Fishing Lake and Nature Trail
The campground’s 30-acre private lake is a standout feature, visible across the campground. It offers excellent fishing spots and water sports options like kayaking and Aquacycles for rent.
Kayaks and Aquacycles are available for rent. Winter camping usually means we don’t choose to participate in water sports. The lack of bugs, heat, and humidity more than offsets this in our view!
The 1.5-mile nature trail winds along the lake, offering peaceful views of birds and sunning turtles. It then meanders through a swampy area to an Osprey overlook, where I once spotted an Osprey majestically taking flight.
Pets Paradise at KOA in Mount Pleasant SC: The Dog Park
Madeline and Finn enjoyed the dog park, with Finn eagerly exploring and even braving the cold lake waters, much to our amusement.
