Louisville sits in the Ohio River Valley and has lush micro-mountains, called knobs, surrounding our city. No matter where you are in the city, you’re close to vibrant fall colors as leaves turn from green to brilliant shades! 

The crisp fall air is filled with the buzz and excitement of the countless activities, festivals, sports, and more all season!

Louisville’s fall colors seem to change overnight. One afternoon the hills and knobs are filled with green leaves and the next day, stunning yellow, orange, and red hues pop from the hillsides! Enjoying the beautiful colors is one of our favorite fall activities in Louisville, KY.

Ever wonder why the leaves change color in the fall? In short, as the days get shorter the leaves stop making food, and the chlorophyll begins breaking down and giving way to the beautiful shades we see in the fall. 

When are the best weeks to see fall foliage in Louisville? One of the best fall activities in Louisville, KY is enjoying the beautiful leaves! Typically the leaves are in full color by the 2nd week of October. For 2024 this should be around October 7, 2024 or so. 

What factors impact leaf colors? Vibrant leaves are affected by weather conditions throughout the Spring, Summer, and even Fall! A late Spring or Hot & Dry Summer can dramatically impact vibrancy of the colors.

The Best Places to View Fall Foliage in Louisville

Looking for the best place to view fall foliage in Louisville? You’re in luck! 

Cherokee Park & Iroquois Park

In the city we recommend Cherokee Park or Iroquois Park for some of the most scenic parks with amazing overlooks of valleys of trees! Both Cherokee Park and Iroquois Park are located a few miles from downtown Louisville. 

Both parks offer plenty of parking and scenic loops for walking along a paved path. If you want to take a quiet walk through the woods, Cherokee Park and Iroquois Park offer multi-use trails for hiking, running, or mountain biking.

Cave Hill Cemtery

Cave Hill Cemetery is one of the Louisville’s oldest and most recognized cemeteries. The grounds of Cave Hill include an arboretum containing some of the oldest trees in Louisvlle that burst with color in the fall.

The cemetery is located on private property which is opened to the public. Please follow the cemetery’s rules and regulations like:

• Driving at or below the posted 20 mph speed limit
• Not walking your dog in the cemetery
• No bike riding
• No parking on the grass
• No picnicking

On October 5, 2024 (11 AM to 4 PM) Cave Hill Cemetery will celebrate Cave Hill Fall Festival which includes: 

• Live Music
• Local Food & Fall Treats
• Wagon Rides
• And more!

Guided tours are available through Cave Hill Cemetery. If you’re into bourbon history you may be interest in the Barrons of Bourbon tour where you can learn about the life of Julius (“Pappy”) Van Winkle.

Bernheim Arboretum & Forest

Take the short 30 minute drive to Bernheim Arboretum & Forest to enjoy 16,000+ acres of breathtaking views! From gentle walking trails around the lake (check out the giants) to challenging trails through the forest (Millenum Trail and Elm Lick Trail) this is a faboluous place for fall activities in Louisville, KY.

On October 5, 2024 (open 1 PM to 3:30PM) check out the views of the changing leaves from the fire tower. The fire tower is open on Saturdays and Sundays weather permitting. It might be worth calling the visitor center prior to driving to Bernheim Forest.

Guided nature hikes are available. Check out the Trail Discovery Hike with naturalist Doug Wilson. On this tour, visitors get to explore the Cave Hollow area and the headwaters of the Long Lick and Pine Creek! 

Admission is technically free, but a donation is suggested per carload of visitors.

Family-Friendly Fall Activities

Sara and I loved the fall season with all the family-friendly fall activities when Madeline and Jack were younger! From finding the perfect pumpkin to running through the corn maze or enjoying a “frightful” night at Boo At the Zoo (Louisville’s largest Halloween party!) Fall is the perfect time to capture picture-perfect moments with your kids.

Pumpkin Picking & Corn Mazes

Over the years we tried all the local pumpkin patches and orchards to get the perfect pumpkin! 

Huber’s Orchard in nearby Starlight, IN is a huge year round farming operations. When I was growing up Huber’s was the place to go for a farm to porch pumpkin. Huber’s offered hayrides out the pumpkin patch and an endless fields of pumpkins! Over the years, Huber’s has grown into a huge operation including a full restaurant, winery, distillery, shops, games, live music and entertainment, and more. 

After creating memories for generations of Louisville and Southern Indiana families, Huber’s gets super crowded so make sure you get there early and bring your patience!

Gallrein Farm located in Shelbyville is great alternate to Huber’s. While Gallrein is a smaller farm, there are so many opportunities for fun while visiting. Visitors can pick the perfect pumpkin, navigate the corn maze, feed the animals in the petting zoo, enjoy a barrel ride pulled by a tractor, bounce in the bounce houses, or shop for some yummy homemade jam!

Mulberry Orchard is a perfect alternative to Huber’s and Gallrein’s. This farm is located in Shelbyville, KY only a few miles beyond Gallrein Farm. We really liked Mulberry because they offered so much value! Kids, young and old, could navigate the corn maze for no charge, enjoy the playsets in a relaxed environment while the parents enjoy some fresh apple cider!

Mulberry Orchard is hosting Luke Bryan’s Farm Tour Concert on September 26, 2024!

Whichever farm you select, enjoy the smiles! They don’t last long! We’ve now graduated to selecting our pumpkins at a roadside stand.

Boo at the Louisville Zoo

Louisville’s largest and maybe oldest (41 years!) Halloween Party, Boo at the Zoo, is a fun way to experience Halloween as a family. Each year, the Louisville Zoo turns into a Halloween paradise decked out to themes like Marvel Superheros, The Wizard of Oz, Toy Story, and more. Kids and parents see their favorite characters “live.”

Madeline and Jack loved getting dressed up for this party. Some adults dress up too. Bring your camera to capture all the smiles!

This party is super popular and gets crowded quickly. We recommend arrive before the gates open to avoid waiting in long lines to park, take the free shuttle, or stand in line to get in!

The Louisville Zoo has a nominal charge for Boo at the Zoo of $13.50 for non-zoo members and $7.00 for zoo members!

Pro Tip: Snag Meijer Anytime tickets for $11.50 to save $2 per person! Hurry this offer ends September 20, 2024.

This party starts up September 28, 2024 and runs through October 27, 2024. Party hours are 5 to 9 PM. The zoo closes at 10 PM. 

Apple Picking

Want to pick your own apples? Then head over to Hidden Hollow Orchard in eastern Louisville! Hidden Hollow is only a few miles from our home and Sara and the kids visit often to pick the most fresh apples ever!

Apple picking season is September and October.

Festivals and Events

Louisville has 25+ fall festivals and events which are some of the best fall activities in Louisville, KY! 

Early September Festivals

• Oktoberfest at the German American Club – September 6 (4 to 11 PM) & 7 (2 to 12 AM); Celebrate Fall at the Oktoberfest with traditional German beer, Hammerschlagen, and Polkatz. Early bird admission until 6 PM is only $5 per person and $10 after 6 PM.

Mid-September Festivals

• Gaslight Festival in Jeffersontown, KY – September 7 to 15. As a local growing up in Jeffersontown (J-town), the Gaslight Festival was the start of Fall. My family enjoyed attending this festival, mingling with the crowd, listening to the live music, and feeling the enthusiasm surrounding the harvest! 2024 marks the 55th year of the festival which includes live music, delicious food, 200+ arts & crafts booths, and even a 5K running race.
• Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, KY – Bardstown is about 45 minutes south of Louisville and the heart of bourbon country! This 3 day festival from September 13 to 15th is the perfect place to take your bourbon knowledge from novice to expert! Don’t miss the bourbon barrel relay race!
• Bourbon & Beyond in Louisville, KY – This music and bourbon festival celebrates the Fall season at the Higher Grounds music center of the Kentucky Fairgrounds. Bourbon & Beyond draws world class performers like Dave Matthews Band, Sting, Zach Bryan, and more! Enjoy this festival from September 19 to 22nd.
• Nulu Fest – this festival highlights all the amazing local shops and eateries of the Nulu district. Nulu is the most happening place in downtown Louisville at the moment (summer 2024). Sara and I dined at La Bodeguita de Mima in late August and were amazed at how many people were out and about! Enjoy a drink at the Hotel Genevieve which is one of Louisville’s coolest new hotels! Nulu Fest is held September 28 and is FREE to attend.

October Festivals

• Louisville Jack O’Lantern Spectacular – Visit Iroquois Park to take a walk through a pumpkin paradise. These hand carved pumpkins are true works of art that showcase the best of Louisville and tell the story of Halloween. Watch the weather and pick a great night for a walk in the park! The Jack O’Lantern Spectacular runs from October 1 to November 2 and starts around dusk.
• Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom – Kentucky Kingdom’s new ownership group is upping the game with this theme park. Back for a third season in 2024 is Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom with over 1,000 pumpkins lit up to welcome the Halloween season!
• St. James Court Art Show –  Celebrating the 68th anniversary this art show brings in over 600 artists showcasing artist, food, nd culture.Walk St. James Court, a stunning Louisville neighborhood! The St. James Court Art Show is held from October 4 to 6 and is free to attend. We suggest taking the Conrad-Caldwell Museum tour when you are in the area!
• Enjoy a Ghost Walk in the Nation’s Most Haunted Neighborhood – This ghost tour / walk is offered nightly through the end of October. We enjoyed this tour in July 2024 and really enjoyed our guide as she shared the stories of these beautiful homes and their haunted past!
• Waverly Hills Haunted House—Louisville’s most famous haunt, Waverly Hills, fires up a real-live haunted house featuring the morgue, lobby, and other creepy rooms to test your belief in the paranormal. Jack and I visited Waverly on a guided ghost tour and a self-guided ghost hunt. We highly suggest the ghost hunt if you want to be locked in with spirits from the other side all night! The Haunted House operates starting September 27!
