What is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a journey through Kentucky’s rich bourbon heritage, featuring a mix of legendary distilleries and innovative craft producers. Spanning 46 distilleries across the state, the trail offers visitors a chance to explore the art of bourbon-making, from mash bill to barrel.
Whether you’re a first-time taster or a seasoned enthusiast, the Bourbon Trail promises an unforgettable experience steeped in history, craftsmanship, and the scenic beauty of bluegrass country.
How I Mastered the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in Two Days
As a Kentucky native, you might think I have the inside track on navigating the Bourbon Trail. But my first trip was far from perfect—I tried to pack in too many distilleries, rushing from tour to tour without savoring the moment. For example, I skipped enjoying a craft cocktail at Woodford Reserve because I was hurrying to my next stop.
The second time around, I learned from my mistakes and focused on balancing adventure and enjoyment, creating a seamless itinerary using Louisville, KY, as my “home base.”
Day 1: Urban Bourbon and Scenic Stops
Kick off your adventure with the Urban Bourbon Trail in downtown Louisville. This area is packed with distilleries, whiskey bars, and bourbon-themed experiences. Here’s how to make the most of your first day:

Day 2: The Bourbon Capital
Day 2 leads us into Bourbon Country and straight into the “Bourbon Capital of the World”. Think about the Bourbon Trail like a compass with an Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western section. Since several hours can separate each region it’s best to choose one region to explore!
For this trip, we’ve selected Bardstown, KY THE “Bourbon Capital of the World”! If you want the scoop on the other regions download my FREE guide HERE.
I like planning my stops to include 1 large distillery in the morning, lunch followed by a small craft distillery and wrapping up with a 1 large brand. Take the guess work out of Bourbon Trail planning by hiring a private guide!
Jim Beam Distilling Co.
Since we’re traveling from Louisville, our first stop is Jim Beam Distilling Co. The Jim Beam Distilling Co is one of the most famous bourbon’s in the world. While the whiskey may not have the same cache as Pappy Van Winkle or Weller, the size and scale of the operations at Jim Beam are amazing! The volume of whiskey made per day is mind blowing.
Fun Fact: On our tour our guide dumped a barrel of whiskey and we used the whiskey theif to taste some straight from the barrel whiskey. This was amazing!
Bardstown Bourbon Company: Enjoy Lunch and a Craft Distillery Tour
Bardstown Bourbon Company jumped onto the bourbon scene in the mid 2010s with a unique finishing process called infusing. The art of making fine bourbon involves time and money and not necessarily in that order.
So, to solve the equation the company got creative and began crafting their unique blends of bourbon whiskey. My favorite is the Discovery Series #9 which is bourbon finished in destillare orange curaçao barrels.
In addition to successfully experimenting with the Discovery Series, BBC is also a craft contract producer. Want to distill your own perfect bourbon whiskey? Then gather your friends, and checkbooks, because at Bardstown Bourbon they can make that dream a reality!
Want a sneak peak at their bourbon making process?
Four Roses Warehouse & Bottling: Optional
While we love Bardstown Bourbon Company and their fine bourbon, one unique experience is discovering the single story rack houses / rick houses (potato…tomato) of Four Roses Cox’s Creek Warehouse and Bottling facility. This 90 minute tour and tasting gives visitors the opportunity to see, smell, and taste the finished product as it’s readied for bottling and shipping!
If you’ve never visited a bourbon rick house then this is a great opportunity! Please note Four Roses distillery is located about 50 minutes away near Lawerenceburg, KY!
Maker’s Mark: A Bourbon Legacy
Once a sleepy distillery nestled in the rolling hills of Loretto, KY, Maker’s Mark has transformed into a bourbon distilling powerhouse. For Sara and me, Maker’s Mark holds a special place in our hearts for two reasons: (1) it’s located in Sara’s mother’s hometown, and (2) they make exceptionally good whiskey.
As an early adopter of wheated bourbon, Maker’s Mark offers a softer, smoother pour compared to the bold, spicy flavors of rye-based bourbons.
What is a Wheated Bourbon?
Bourbon must contain at least 51% corn, but the secondary grain determines much of its flavor profile.
- Bourbons made with rye, such as Bulleit or Wild Turkey, tend to have a spicy and bold character.
- Wheated bourbons like Maker’s Mark, Weller, or Pappy Van Winkle are known for their smoothness and sweetness, making them approachable for newcomers and aficionados alike.
Historic Star Hill Farm
Maker’s Mark is located at the Historic Star Hill Farm, a picturesque campus where bourbon production spans several historic buildings:
- The still house, home to an enormous column still, where the distillation magic begins.
- The bottling line, where every bottle is carefully hand-dipped in the iconic red wax.
- The underground rackhouse, a unique feature that keeps aging barrels at an ideal temperature.
A visit to Maker’s Mark is a feast for the senses, from the sight of handcrafted barrels aging in rickhouses to the aroma of mash fermenting. One of the highlights of the tour is the tasting room, where you’ll pass beneath “The Spirit of the Maker,” a stunning glass installation by artist Dale Chihuly, permanently on display in the rickhouse.
Pro Tip: Don’t leave without visiting the gift shop! Plan to buy and hand-dip your own bottle of Maker’s Mark in their signature red wax—a memorable keepsake for any bourbon lover.
This two-day itinerary balances quick visits with immersive stops, offering easy access to all the highlights without rushing.
Short on Time to See the Entire Bourbon Trail?
Maybe you only have one day in Kentucky and you want to see the Bourbon Trail. In that case, we recommend taking a self-guided driving tour. We use self guided tours when we visit National Parks like Yellowstone and Acadia. These are a great way to learn all the history and see the rolling hills of Kentucky.
As you pass by the famous distilleries like Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, and Woodford reserve stop in the gift shop and enjoy a walk around the property or a craft cocktail!
5 Actionable Steps for Planning Your Kentucky Bourbon Trail Trip
Ready to plan your bourbon adventure? Here are five essential tips:
- Book Tours Early
- Many of the distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Four Roses, and Maker’s Mark fill up fast, especially on weekends. Making reservations 60+ days early is often required!
- Visit Craft Distilleries like Kentucky Artisans Distillery, Jeptha Creed, Castle & Key, and New Riff, which often allow walk-up tours. Visitors can explore the grounds of Castle & Key and enjoy a cocktail even if they cannot join a tour.
- Dress the Part
- Many distilleries require closed-toe shoes for safety during tours.
- Consider Private Transportation
- Hire a car service or join a tour group from Mint Julep Tours, the Bourbon Boys, or Travel The Trail for safe, stress-free travel between stops.
- We recommend utilizing a driver because the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is spread across several longer drives. We want you to focus on enjoying the day rather than navigating the winding Kentucky backroads after a few bourbon tastings!
- Explore More than Bourbon
- Don’t miss the scenic drives through bluegrass Kentucky, which offer breathtaking views of rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. Enhance your experience with visits to horse farms or the iconic Kentucky Derby Museum, where you can delve into the state’s rich equestrian heritage.
- For a deeper understanding of Kentucky bourbon history, explore the Frazier History Museum in Louisville, KY. Its exhibits provide a fascinating look at the origins and evolution of bourbon in the region.
- Pace Yourself
- Limit yourself to 3-4 distilleries per day, including stops for lunch at local restaurants or gift shops to break up tastings. Make sure you stay hydrated!
Where to Slow Down and Savor the Bourbon Trail
For a slower pace and a memorable bourbon experience, head to Whiskey Thief Distilling Co.. This hidden gem offers an informal tour where you can learn about their craft whiskey production and even bottle your own whiskey straight from the barrel. Unwind around the fire pit with a cocktail in hand, play yard games, and enjoy the serene Kentucky countryside. It’s a one-of-a-kind stop that embodies the relaxing spirit of the Bourbon Trail.
A First-Timer’s Guide to Bourbon
Developing My Taste for Bourbon
When I was growing up in Kentucky during the 80s and 90s, bourbon culture wasn’t on my radar. At the time, bourbon was more of a quiet tradition than the booming phenomenon it is today. By the time I started college, however, bourbon enthusiasm was accelerating, and like many of my peers, I was curious.
Bourbon, like coffee, is an acquired taste. At first, the aroma overwhelmed me—I only smelled the alcohol. My first sip? It was a bold wake-up call for my taste buds, far from the light lagers I was used to. But slowly, through shared moments with friends, I began to appreciate bourbon’s complexity.
My journey started with mixed drinks—bourbon and Coke, then bourbon and ginger ale. Eventually, I graduated to classics like the Old Fashioned, savoring the way the bitters and sugar balanced the spirit. Over time, I developed a taste for bourbon neat or with a single cube of ice. It wasn’t just the flavor; it was the camaraderie. Bourbon is a social drink, best enjoyed with good friends and good stories.
Two Key Tips for Bourbon Beginners
- Tip 1: Take a small sip first to “warm up” your taste buds. Bourbon’s boldness can be surprising, so start small to let your palate adjust.
- Tip 2: There’s no wrong way to enjoy bourbon. Whether you like it mixed with Coke, in a fun cocktail, or neat, the best way to enjoy bourbon is the way that makes you happy.

How to Properly Enjoy a Bourbon Tasting
Whether you’re a first-time bourbon taster or a seasoned enthusiast, knowing how to approach a bourbon tasting can make the experience truly memorable. Here’s a guide to savoring every sip like a pro:
1. Start with the Right Glass
- Bourbon is best enjoyed in a Glencairn glass or a tulip-shaped glass. These designs concentrate the aromas, allowing you to fully experience the nose of the bourbon.
2. Observe the Appearance
- Hold the glass up to the light and take note of the bourbon’s color. The hues—amber, caramel, or deep mahogany—offer clues about the aging process and the type of barrel used.
3. Savor the Nose
- Swirl the bourbon gently to release its aromas. Take a moment to inhale deeply through your nose. You may notice notes of vanilla, caramel, oak, or even hints of spice or fruit.
4. Take a Small Sip
- Sip a small amount and let it roll across your palate. Notice how the flavors develop: the initial sweetness from the corn, the spice from the rye (or softness if it’s wheated), and the oakiness from the barrel.
5. Consider the Finish
- After swallowing, pay attention to the finish—the lingering flavors and sensations. Is it smooth or spicy? Does the warmth last long, or is it subtle?
6. Hydrate and Reset Your Palate
- Between tastings, take small sips of water to cleanse your palate. This helps you fully appreciate the unique flavors of each bourbon.
7. Respect the Tasting Limits
- Kentucky law limits bourbon tastings to 1.75 ounces per distillery, which is just enough to appreciate the bourbon without overwhelming your senses. Use this as a guideline to enjoy responsibly.
Pro Tips for a Memorable Tasting
- Ask Questions: Distillery guides are experts! Ask about the mash bill, aging process, or what makes their bourbon unique.
- Take Notes: Write down the bourbons you taste and your impressions. This will help you remember your favorites.
- Don’t Rush: Enjoy the experience. Bourbon is crafted with care, and tasting it should be a thoughtful process.
By following these steps, you’ll not only appreciate the complexity of bourbon but also create lasting memories of your tasting experience. Whether you’re at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Bardstown Bourbon Company, or a boutique distillery, taking the time to properly enjoy each pour will make your journey through Kentucky’s bourbon country unforgettable.
Discover Kentucky Bourbon: Quick History
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail showcases some of the best Kentucky Bourbon distilleries in our fine state. Along the Bourbon Trail, visitors get to explore the rich history of bourbon whiskey in Kentucky and how Bourbon became the only native spirit of America!
As a spirit Kentucky Bourbon has experienced many “boom and bust” cycles. Prohibition was certainly one of the darkest periods in the bourbon industry. In the pre-prohibition days over 3,000 distilleries operated with an estimate 200+ distilleries in Kentucky! Prohibition nearly destroyed the bourbon industries. Only a few distilleries survived by producing medicinal whiskey. Americans definitely were “sickly” during Prohibition.
From the end of WWII brown spirits in particular Kentucky Bourbon exploded in popularity. Craft cocktails like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned were the rage! In good times, industries expand and bourbon producers were no exception.
Then, in the 1970s Americans taste and preferences began shifting towards clear spirits like Gin and Vodka. The bourbon industry fell from favor and was sitting on tons of great whiskey aging in rick houses across the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky.
In the mid-1990s some next generation bourbon executives began creatively marketing some of the fine bourbon that had been aging for 10 to 20 years. Slowly the industry began resurging. Americans and global taste buds began demanding Kentucky Bourbon.
The Rise of The Kentucky Bourbon Trail
In 1999, the Kentucky Distilleries Association launched the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The Bourbon Trail was an opportunity to create a unique experience for bourbon enthusiast to get a first hand look at how their favorite spirits are crafted. As an added bonus, our fine state gets to show off some of the best scenery in the country…the rolling hills of central Kentucky!
Initially, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail included seven distilleries: Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Four Roses, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, Heaven Hill, and Buffalo Trace. In 2009, Buffalo Trace decided to leave the official Bourbon Trail! So, you can’t get the Buffalo Trace stamp on your passport, you can still visit Buffalo Trace as you travel the trail!
During the early years of the Bourbon Trial only a few thousand visitors traveled the trail. Fast forward to 2024 and an estimated 2.55 million visitors are experiencing Kentucky’s bourbon history!

I recommend driving through the Audubon Park neighborhood during April and early May to enjoy the Dogwood Trees in full bloom!
- Fall: Experience the Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, where you can enjoy live music, tastings, and distillery-sponsored events. Pair it with the St. James Art Fair for a mix of culture and bourbon. I recommend visiting Kentucky around mid-October for the most stunning fall foliage. For this trip stay in Lexington, KY. Tour distilleries on Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday head to Red River Gorge to explore the stunning scenic overlooks of this amazing Geological Area!
